momentary procrastination

I'm at work at my desk this Saturday night, instead of going out or cuddling [profile] patgreene, trying valiantly to get this paper finished by Monday. The Japanese conference organizers already gave me a week's extension...

In any case, after my LJ valentine whining yesterday afternoon I went home and surprised Pat, and that in turn didn't scrape :-). And with a full night's sleep last night, I'm actually reasonably clear-headed... despite wishing [personal profile] geekchick were closer. Oh, well... enough momentary procrastination here, back to work now.

Heehee! Like I said to Pat earlier, I was watching a Travel Channel show on Tokyo this afternoon and hearing the population density numbers started thinking "why did I want to go there again?" ;)Yeah, I knew it was crowded and expensive, it's not a shock; just kind of amusing that someone who doesn't adore crowds has any interest at all in Tokyo. =)

Besides, while I'd probably fly into Tokyo, this conference is at Nara, a place with ancient temples and ruins and tame deer, located 500 miles or so south of Tokyo and about 20 miles east of Osaka... fewer teeming crowds in Nara, I suspect.

"Tame deer?" Ah, yes, that's what they would like you to believe. These are wild deer that people feed. They get pissed off if you don't feed them or if you don't feed them enough. Children run in fear as their parents laugh and try to take pictures of their children with the "cute" deer.

Those deer are really evil rats in disguise.

Sounds like memories I have of tourists in Yellowstone, getting too close to moose... evil rats, eh?

You're absolutely right. (grin)

Despite the deer, the Great Buddha (Daibutsu, I think) and the largest wooden building in the world (Todaiji Temple) is very, very cool. You'll have a good time in Nara. Nara isn't far from Kyoto, either, which is another wonderful place to visit.

Also not far from Nara is Byodoin which is the building that is featured on the 10 yen coin.

I've got some pictures I took during the summer at:
Byodoin
Kyoto and Nara
Fushimi Inari Shrine - just south of Kyoto going towards Nara

Thanks for the picture links! Those are tantalizing... I hope that I get to make the trip. Evil rats notwithstanding ;-).
