Remote summer job, anyone?

Our camp on Devon Island is looking for a cook for a 6-week stint, or two people for 3-week postings. The job would entail feeding 20-30 people 3 meals daily, supervising the kitchen (incl. helpers), menu planning, and would get one day off per week. Pay would be $CDN 450/wk, roughly US$375/wk. No benefits other than working in a tent with space scientists and geologists, and medical care provided on the premises by the camp doctor. And transportation and costs to/from the camp, of course...

That sounds like a blast! I don't have any experience supervising a kitchen, though :-/

I'll spread the word out for you, though!

Thanks! It would be a lot of fun... but strenuous. You know Pascal, though...

As fine a cook as I am.... I've never actually dealt with anything on that scale... 90 meals a day! And no kitchen supervisory experience. Still most ready willing and able to be a helper though :)

Heh, just got your other comment, have emailed you. :)

Thank you again,

Maybe you should say /when/ this is? And where exactly is Devon Island? Would a person need prior cook experience?

It sounds interesting... Must do more fieldwork!

From http://www.arctic-mars.org/about/devon.html

Devon Island is located in the Territory of Nunavut in Canada. The expedition base camp will be located just outside the northwest area of the Haughton impact crater, which is located at 75°22'N latitude and 89°41'W longitude.

Devon Island is the largest uninhabited island on Earth, with a surface area of approximately 66,800 km2. ...

Prior large-scale cooking experience, either in restaurant, field camp or institutional foodservice settings, is necessary. They might accept volunteer assistants without that kind of experience, but getting there is expensive...

Interesting. But I think the deal killer would be that I can't be exposed to wheat flour without a good mask.

And I tend to cook vegetarian. I never was one for large hunks of mystery meat.

*sigh* that sounds delightful right now!

It can be very quiet. Outside of camp, there are no humans around for a couple of hundred miles...

If I could find a way to get away from kids for 3 weeks, I'd be there in a flash!

You'd do well, I think.

If I don't get this salaried job from my workplace, I may well consider it for the 3 week stint. I'll know in a week or so.

Ow. After they trained you? Good luck... (hug)

[identity profile] sinboy.livejournal.com 2004-03-05 04:41 pm (UTC)(link)
They won;t reain me for the salaried position unless I've got the job. If I do have the job, I'll not be able to make it out to Devon.
