Sigh... yet more unwelcome fungal residents in our yard. This time, several phallic-looking morels, each with a thick shaft a couple of inches in diameter, in the leaf mulch in the side yard. The kids think they're weird... as long as they don't touch the things. Gah.

Oooh, recipes! (I know that even mycologists end up needing liver transplants, but if there's an expert you can ask to make sure they're morels -- they aren't really like other mushrooms -- you might be in luck. :)

Actually, even if they are perfectly for safe for most people to eat, Brian couldn't. He has an allergy that can make him quite ill (although not deathly so). The kids we don't feed mushrooms on the off chance that they've inherited his allergy (it's not like wheat or dairy -- it's quite easy to live without mushrooms), and I've sort of lost the taste for them after so many years of not eating them. (When we go out, I tend not to get mushroom dishes because then we couldn't share food.)

When I ordered the meals for our wedding dinner, I asked the hotel over and over whether the London Broil had mushrooms on it. They assured me it didn't. Guess what? They were wrong. Poor Brian couldn't even eat dinner at his own wedding reception.

Oh yes, I remember [livejournal.com profile] hopeforyou's allergy, but forget that Brian shares it.

And yet, and yet, doesn't this mean that there's proper biological activity happening?

Me, I don't like *bugs*. Mostly.

Heh. Where there's fungi, there must be bugs also...

:::pretends to scream:::

There's a Huge huntsman spider in my car who cavorts about when I drive at night. He tends to do an internal lap of the vehicle. So far, even though spiders like me, he hasn't frisked about on my person.

If you have leaf mulch, you have fungi. Morels are meant to be rather nice, but given allergies, maybe you should invite some local fungi fanciers to enjoy them?

I thought about suggestiong that myself, but he already thinks I am enough of a freak for wanting to eat plants, that eating fungi in front of him is something I try to avoid.

It's bizarre to think that anyone would want to eat something growing from heaps of decaying leaves in my yard... but if anyone wants them, they're welcome.

Is there any way to tell that they're really morels? Because if they are, I'd be perfectly happpy to get them off your property. I'd even be willing to share them with [livejournal.com profile] tenacious_snail, and not eat them in front of you. :)

They aren't verpas or brain-like... clearly yellow morels, IMO, but then I pay little attention to mushrooms other than to avoiding them ;^).

Oh! Amanda has a great book on mushrooms! In fact, so do I, but er, I'm not sure where it is.

Lots of pictures and the like. I was so jealous of the Europeans for just going out to collect mushrooms to eat. They weren't scared of getting the wrong kind or anything. They had seccrit knowledge!
