You've got to be kidding, right?

Trading off seats mid-flight is probably frowned upon by the TSA at this point, and is definitely a PITA for your fellow passengers and crew. Plus, a first-class ticket is worth thosands of dollars, for which brian1789 has spent an awful lot of time on airplanes. It's not like sharing a soda; more like attempting to share an all-expense-paid vacation for one that you won.

Generally a pretty generous person, I certainly wouldn't be sharing any transcontinental first-class upgrade I were to receive -- though my having that option is unlikely, as I'm an occasional tourist who flys on a budget. But I also didn't begrudge it one bit the last time my travel companion got upgraded away from me.

I might let princeofwands have an upgrade I received, given that he's 6'2" and I'm short enough to stand under the overhead storage without stooping, short enough that putting my carryon under the seat in front of me doesn't generally stop me from stretching out my legs.

I think Brian sees me as co-owner of the frequent flyer account (quite frankly, I do too) since I spend so much time as a single parent : ) That said, he's generally generous with me about upgrades.

On each of the (domestic) flights I was on in the last week, we were told by the crew that we weren't even allowed to use the bathrooms in cabins other than the one we were ticketed in, so I doubt they'd look favorably on the idea of switching out seats mid-flight.

Ooh I wonder if that is wrong with my new desk top computer it keeps freezing up, you can use it for say one program and then bang it freezes, if my hubser put the DIMMS in the wrong order? I am so computer duh, sorry but I sort of know what DIMMS are..I think. I know you always need two of them. :)

Interesting that I didn't even consider putting gender into the equation...I considered...."I'll let my friend share this seat with me and I'll take time in their seat so we can both share the fortune."

I confess I get a bit annoyed after awhile that everyone always assumes such a statement is about gender and somehow patronizing.....sometimes its just about generosity and graciousness. Irregardless of my lack of knowledge about the circumstances, of which karenbyknight enlightened me.

But, and I'm using brian1789's journal to say so, I'm glad that you and I are close enough that I can insert that mini rant and I know you won't be offended.

I think the primary problem here is the overloaded culture context wrapped up in bot's having used the term "gentleman". Equally a problem, at this point in the thread is I think Les' occasional warring against infered gender assertions from the habit of constantly resisting the assertions that are stated, implied, or assumed as granted.

But yeah - considerate of friend, coworker, traveling companion. Traveler with known health issues and travel problems. Lots of categorizations that don't have anything to do with her being a her.

you're right, Bry. My response was entirely about the notions of "gentlemen" being a gendered-term, and not about being considerate. Most of the thread has addressed the question as to what is, in fact, considerate behavior, and how to balance the "considerate to other passengers" with "considerate to co-worker/friend/travelling companion".

I'm also someone who would rather have a well-rested-Jay than a bigger seat in first class.

There is no question to anyone who really knows you that your are a gentleman through and through. I didn't raise you to be selfish or inconsiderate. And you are not. I think you should be happy you got bumped and try to get some well deserved and needed rest in first class. Try not to use all the time for working.
