Today... frustrated in drilling, we only went another 15cm. I joined a traverse to the center of the crater, and collected specimens from the central uplift area with some hydrothermal evidence.
dangerpudding also went (her first trip away from base camp, yay!), and Sathya made an excellent dinner in her absence.
my tent
Since Les asked about living spaces... here's a shot of my tent, with a view inside. |

Drill was jammed
Several times today, the drill jammed or choked. We made little progress, only about 15 cm. |

Sarah vs Qimmiq
This afternoon I joined a traverse to the center of the crater. Sarah had the day off, so joined us. Here she is... note that her helmet is on and strapped. ;) |

Arctic poppy
Growing against the elements, out at ground-zero... |

Sarah in the crater
She handled her ATV very well... here's a photo taken today in the crater. |

Pascal stuck...
I was second in the line of ATVs, behind Pascal. He decided to try a path down from our ridge. I thought it looked dubious and pulled up short. Here's Pascal stuck in the mud... |

Hanagud dinner
Sathya has made an Indian dinner once during every DAME field season, the past 3 years. Tonight was excellent... here he is at dinner. And a part of the crater rim (other side of the MS Hab) was named in his honor. |

I can't help but giggle at the 35-50 degrees I remember her quoting being so much warmer than I thought it'd be from what you guys had been discussing. ::grin::
::hugs::
And since I was rather distracted with another birthday boy on Saturday, happy belated birthday!!!

I've been curious about the relative layouts of the crater and the main camp... is the main camp outside the crater, or in a different part of the crater from the drill site?
And if it's the former, how steep are the crater walls? The Arizona crater didn't look like anything that one could drive an ATV down...
