One disadvantage of not going East to visit relatives over this holiday period is that there's not much to do at home. Friends are out of town, and there's no ready-made set of activities with various siblings and cousins...

Today: work a normal schedule, maybe go buy a computer with [personal profile] hopeforyou, cooking sweet potatoes in the evening.

Thanksgiving: nothing much until mid-afternoon, then over to [personal profile] runeshower and [profile] jasonhollister's place for a joint meal, then hang out until time to drop off James for his youth-group trip to Disneyland.

Friday: nothing. nada. Laundry, I guess. Maybe go to see LOTR if anyone else is interested (?).

Saturday: pick up James early, nothing else until the pool party that night.

Sunday: church in the morning, then nothing planned.

heh... lifestyles of the not-rich and socially-challenged...

My plans for the next couple days are to spend Thanksgiving dinner with friends, then clean the apartment. I'm very much interested in seeing LOTR -- so is [livejournal.com profile] sinboy -- but he has to work Black Friday.

Maybe we could set up a joint outing in a couple of weeks, on a Saturday?

Two Towers is indeed opening the 18th (thanks, Dawn!) That's a Wednesday... Is [livejournal.com profile] sinboy likely to be working that day? If not, we could try and do opening day....

LOTR: Are you referring to The Fellowship, or The Two Towers? I'm not aware of The Fellowship playing anywhere, though maybe some enterprising soul has scheduled it near you in a repertory theater? The Two Towers doesn't open till Dec. 18 (which reminds me, gotta get Fandango tix...). If you haven't seen the Extended Version yet, let me suggest that highly. In fact, there are some important scenes in there that PJ didn't want to cut, but had to, for length. He negotiated with the studio to release the Extended Version in time for folks to watch it before TT appeared in the theaters. The Extended Version is truly awesome. They've put in bits and pieces ALL OVER the place--sometimes just a minute or two, but completely seamlessly. They make a huge difference, and the movie is even better than I thought it was before. And it was damn good. Now I REALLY can't wait to see the Extended version of the other two!

Now, why did I think Two Towers opened this week? Maybe because Time's cover story is about the movie. Opening the 18th is great! it means Brian and I can (if we can get tickets) go see a matineee before the kids get out of school!

If he only did what I told him he'd save himself a hell of a lot of trouble : >

As far as movies and pop culture goes... I have no clue, so I defer to her superior knowledge and experience. If she says "we should see this," then we usually see it... if she says "that had bad reviews," then we don't...

Aside from not being on the Right Coast. ;)

Ah, see...in my mind, that's a plus. I hate having a ton of stuff I feel obligated to do.

For me, your planned weekend sounds just about right. Not too crammed with things I'm scheduled to do, plenty of time left open for me to either veg around the house or find something spontaneous to do, if I feel like it. If I had something officially planned for every day of the long weekend, I'd need a couple days off next week to recover from that. Last time I had something scheduled for every day of the weekend I just felt exhausted all day Monday, like I hadn't had time to recharge *at all*.

If I'm only doing it out of obligation, I agree. But I get restless without *something* to do... in my ideal world, I'd go to at least one or two gatherings per holiday/weekend day.

For me, a day at home with nothing planned is stressful, "empty" rather than relaxing. I don't watch TV or videos. I rarely read for pleasure anymore. Too much AIM and my eyes blur... The kids are good for a couple of games or park outings per day, but then they're off by themselves playing the rest of the time. My safety valve has been home-improvement or yardwork... but I miss being around other adults.

And I don't hate people.... (?)

Yikes. That would stress me out so badly I couldn't begin to tell you. I really need decompression time, and something like that is not it for me.

It's a quote, from the movie "Clerks". It wasn't meant to imply that you did.

Which is why I need you or [livejournal.com profile] patgreene around to patiently explain the cultural references to me (smile)...
