Help?

We're awash in fruit. Our 30-year-old tangerine tree has probably two bushels of fruit or more holding down its branches... anyone local want some? James picked three more grocery-bags' worth today...

And happy birthday, Mom!

I would love to have some of your tangerines! What's your weekend schedule like?

No social events, just the kids' skating lessons Saturday morning and church on Sunday morning. Otherwise, completely open... I could drop some by your place Friday evening or Saturday or Sunday afternoons?

I'll help bring some to lounch tommorow.

Sure! Thanks...

...bloody.

And we're not intending to be down that way until _next_ weekend...or I'd be happy to take some off your hands/tree. :/

Any chance you'll be up in the East Bay area any time soon?

[identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com 2003-01-30 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
In the absence of any particular reason to visit the East Bay over the next few weeks, I wasn't planning to come over there anytime soon... you're certainly welcome to some if you'll be anywhere nearby.

I'll try and touch base with you around next Friday or Sunday, then...we're expecting to be down in San Jose on both Friday and Sunday, so it's possible that we might be able to stop by.

I'll hopefully be happily ensconced in a sweetie's arms in Minneapolis that weekend, but [profile] patgreene will be here then...

Can you crystallise some, whole or sliced, for next holiday season?

[identity profile] brian1789.livejournal.com 2003-01-31 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
That's a thought... I always wondered how crystallised citrus wedges or peel were made. Thanks...

I've candied orange peel - it was easy, and far more delicious than any commercial product that I've found. Jucier.

Then I double dipped them in fair-trade dark chocolate :-) Actually, I think I used Maya Gold, so make that fair-trade dark orange spice chocolate...

Oooooh, Yum! What a great idea!

They'd probably be good for preserves, too. Think "Golden Shred" and the marmalade in which Paddington is continually covered. I've got a HUGE collection of books on canning, if anyone over there wants to give it a shot. And I'd be happy to advise in general, if you don't already have canning experience, and even loan you my equipment for a bit--don't think I'm gonna be needing it for a while. But you gotta come get it, 'cuz I won't be near you for a while yet, I'm guessing. Or you could delegate someone to pick it up. Theoretically, Josh and Jen will be up to the same party we will on Saturday (assuming this cold doesn't get worse and keep me from attending), so we could give it to them, and they could give it to you. All I'd ask would be a jar or two of the product, as a "rental fee"!

I assure you, having a stack of jars of jam around is a REALLY REALLY good thing, come the Holiday season.

Yes, tangarine marmalade would probably also be good. I'm interested at the terminology, because we wouldn't call this `canning' in Rightpondia - and `canning' is something exotic and potentially dangerous, whereas making marmalade is common-place, straight-forward and safe.

But this situation is exactly the reason why preserves were invented, anyhow :-) And home made usually tastes best - once you've got the knack :-)

Just to clarify... James didn't do a cotton (or tangerine)-pickin' thing. He was at skating. Mom (with minimal help from James's brothers) picked those three bags worth. Not that it really matters, but if I'm going to strain my arms like that, I'd like some credit. : >

Duly noted, my mistake. Apologies for the hard work misfiled...

Credit noted out here, too! You go, Pat!

And happy birthday, Mom!

Thanks, I love you!
