And it isn't just because my paper is late... I generally dread today, and am usually left feeling inadequate, bereft, or both. Gestures are confused, dinners are disastrous, and I always forget something or someone. All for a commercially-manipulated holiday... sigh.

Are your loved ones people who need an observation or recognition of Valentine's Day? It might help to sort those to whom it matters from those who couldn't give less of a whit.

Speaking solely for myself, Valentine's Day is just another day -- except that I have to get two recalcitrant children to sign cards for all their classmates. (Fortunately, now that J is in middle school, he doesn't do that any more.) I am happy if someone sends me something, but I neither expect it nor am upset if they don't. I am just as happy if someone sends me flowers on St. Swithin's Day, for that matter.

And for the record, [livejournal.com profile] brian1789 gave me one of the best Valentine's Day presents I ever had: three years ago, he gave me hand-made chocolates. Some of my friends were quite envious.... "You mean, he made you chocolate truffles? Oooohhh....."

Valentine's Day is just another day -- except that I have to get two recalcitrant children to sign cards for all their classmates . . . this is one of the traditions that's strongly discouraged me from having any deep feeling for Valentine's Day.

For myself, I don't need it; I think it's a good excuse to do things for my loved ones (although I don't feel I *have* to do anything on this one particular day), but I have no expectation that anyone will do anything for me. I'm pleasantly surprised if they do, but I'm not upset if they don't either. I'd rather hear little indications year-round that I'm cared for than get one grand gesture on a Hallmark holiday. =)

Actually, that's very close to how I feel about the day, as far as receiving attention goes...

I think that it is more of an internal critic than external... my sweeties may be happy enough, but I'm likely to judge myself as falling short of the effort that they each and collectively deserve...
