Note: I have not actually used lines #1 or #2. #3 did elicit a positive response, made the person feel desirable, and yet they do appear to understand why I found it inelegant. I do find that I tend to be (overly) direct with people, but it may be because I'm so adverse to being coy. That just isn't my style. Though I suspect I may scare some folks off with the directness, too.

As an aside, #2 works better with me because it praises something going on actively between us, not just flattery or expressing raw desire... in the latter case, I'd probably be speechless ;-).
