not hard to read between *those* lines...

From a broadcast memo to all staff, today:

SUBJECT: Special Notice - Schedule of January Transition Assistance
Classes

NASA and the Ames Research Center are undergoing a transformation and
all employees may find the following classes and events helpful as
they seek opportunities in this change. The Human Resources Division
has planned several events in January 2005 focusing on proposal
writing, retirement, and career change. Classes are open to any Ames
or contractor employee. Please contact
[name] at Ext [number]
if you have missed the registration deadline but would still like to
attend.

...eh?

HR + "seek opportunities" + "Transition Assistance
Classes" sounds an awful lot like "Learn how to find a new job."

(nods) lots of people who have been working in "traditional" aeronautics disciplines -- aerodynamics, structures, aircraft propulsion systems -- will need to find new career niches soon, as under the current administration the funding for R&D in those areas has been greatly reduced. Wind tunnels are being closed, and even the folks doing supercomputer-based Navier-Stokes flow modelling are being cut back. This is in order to use those funds toward the new human lunar exploration program, since overall NASA is seeing little real budget increase.

so, they're calling it 'transformation' now.. huh.?

well, that's a nice WORD......

:)
hmph.

It's just Bush-II-speak... any proposed change in the Federal Government is called "transformative" if it wants a blessing from the White House.

Oh, no....

I don't think that counts so much as something to read between the lines as a big, flashing neon billboard. Do you think your particular job is likely to be in danger?

Unlikely, because I have external project funding set through the end of 2006, thus far (since I've *been* proposal writing all along, lacking the easy internal program funding of many of my colleagues over the past 5 years). Since I have support lined up, though, someone *could* try to muscle me out and grab it... I've seen it happen before.

That's subtle.
